Iceland and Nordic Embassies Host Panel Discussions on Gender Equality and Economic Growth
To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Fourth United Nations World Conference on Women, the Embassies of Iceland, Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden in China jointly hosted a panel discussions in Beijing on 28 May under the theme “Gender Equality – A Driver for Economic Growth.” The event brought together Nordic and Chinese voices to reflect on achievements since the historic 1995 Beijing Conference and to explore how gender equality continues to shape prosperous, resilient, and inclusive societies.
Held at the Embassy of Iceland, the forum featured leading voices from government, civil society, and business, with discussions focused on policy innovation, economic empowerment, and inclusive growth. Participants examined the ways in which equal opportunities for women in the workforce and leadership can contribute to stronger economies and more sustainable development.
Three decades on from the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the Nordic countries and China have seen notable progress in female labour force participation, consistently exceeding the global average. The discussions highlighted how greater gender parity in employment contributes significantly to labour supply and GDP growth, while also strengthening social cohesion and welfare systems.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Thorir Ibsen, Ambassador of Iceland to China, emphasized the long-standing commitment of Iceland and its Nordic partners to gender equality:
“Gender equality is the foundation of prosperous and resilient societies. When women have equal opportunities to lead—whether in government, business, or civil society—nations benefit from more inclusive decision-making, stronger welfare systems, and sustainable economic growth. Iceland invests in gender equality not only as a moral imperative, but as a proven strategy for building healthier, fairer, and more successful societies.”
The panel discussions also served as a platform for knowledge-sharing and collaboration, offering insights into ongoing challenges and best practices for promoting gender equity in economic life. With shared Nordic and Chinese interests in sustainability and inclusive development, the event underscored the mutual benefits of deepening dialogue and cooperation on gender issues.
