HRC59 - Iceland statement - ID w COI on the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, and in Israel
59th session of the Human Rights Council
Interactive Dialogue with Commission of Inquiry on the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, and in Israel
Statement by H.E. Thorbjörg Sigrídur Gunnlaugsdóttir, Minister of Justice of Iceland
June 2025
Mr. President,
Iceland recognized the independence and sovereignty of the Palestinian State in 2011 and welcomes the growing number of countries that have already done so or are considering taking that step.
The lack of dignity for Palestinians living under occupation calls for our undivided attention and the status quo is unsustainable.
The blockade of Gaza and deliberate withholding of humanitarian assistance fail every test of proportionality and have left the people of Gaza on the brink of famine. Iceland underlines the importance of an immediate ceasefire, return of hostages and adequate humanitarian access in line with humanitarian principles.
It is evident that the war in Gaza has had a severe impact on the enjoyment of human rights by the entire population. We cannot advocate for adherence to international law only for some. International law must remain our compass in this conflict, as in others.
Let me reaffirm Iceland’s support for a credible pathway towards peace, both for Palestinians and Israelis, based on a two-state solution.
I thank you.
