HRC59 - Iceland statement - ID w Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide
Human Rights Council – 59th Session
Item 3: Interactive Dialogue with the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide
Statement bv Iceland
23 June 2025
Mr. President,
Iceland thanks the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide for her update.
Globally, we are witnessing a troubling escalation of discrimination and violence with irreversible consequences.
The international community must work to prevent genocide. Indifference and inaction should never be an acceptable response when populations face the threat of genocide and other atrocity crimes.
Disinformation and misuse of social media platforms exacerbate hate speech and contribute to polarization. Ensuring that international human rights norms and standards are implemented in the digital realm can prevent the dissemination of harmful messages.
There is an urgent need for the integration of prevention and protection into peace processes. In line with the prevention of genocide and the responsibility to protect frameworks, we urge all parties to conflicts to prioritize the protection of civilians and to take immediate steps to de-escalate tensions, prevent further loss of life, and engage in a solid political solutions.
Special Adviser, how can Member States reduce barriers to effective civil society participation in early warning and atrocity prevention efforts in the UN human rights system?
I thank you.
