HRC59 - NB8 statement - ID w SR on the situation of human rights in Burundi
Human Rights Council ‒ 59th session
Item 3: Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Burundi
Joint statement by Norway on behalf of the Nordic-Baltic States
27 June 2025
President,
I have the honour to deliver this statement on behalf of the Nordic-Baltic States. We thank the Special Rapporteur for his oral update.
We remain deeply concerned about the widespread and serious human rights violations and abuses that continue to take place in the context of widespread impunity in Burundi. We are deeply concerned over reports of extrajudicial executions, torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment and sexual and gender-based violence.
Punishment of human rights defenders, journalists, political opposition, and civil society for exercising their rights to freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly is unacceptable and must be stopped.
The Government of Burundi is responsible for protecting the human rights of all of its citizens. We strongly urge the Government to fulfil its responsibilities. And to that end, collaborate fully with the Special Rapporteur and other UN human rights mechanisms.
Special Rapporteur,
Can you elaborate on your cooperation with the Burundi Government, if any, and how the international community can best support your mandate?
