Ávarp í umræðu um lönd sem þarfnast sérstakrar athugunar

HRC43

Mr./Madame President,

Iceland is concerned about the human rights situation in Libya. Widespread impunity for human rights violations and abuses call for urgent attention of this Council to support accountability and the respect for both international humanitarian and human rights law. We call for a suspension of hostilities, a ceasefire and full and unimpeded humanitarian access to assist those in need.

We remain concerned about the situation of human rights in the Philippines and what looks like an expansion of the so-called “war on the drugs” to killings of human rights defenders, journalists, lawyers and others. We encourage the Philippines to cooperate with the Office of the High Commissioner and the Special Mandates of this Council.

We continue to express our concern about the situation of human rights defenders in Saudi Arabia and the continued detention and prosecution of many that have fought only for their basic rights. While noting developments in the country that we continue to follow closely, we reiterate that any positive developments are overshadow by the detention and prosecution of these individuals. We continue to call for their release.

Finally, we reiterate the concern raised by our Foreign Minister during the High-level segment about the human rights situation in Venezuela. Serious human rights violations such as arbitrary detentions, torture and extrajudicial killings should not be allowed to continue with impunity.

I thank you.
