COVID-19 update

The Government of Iceland has decided to advise Icelanders not to travel abroad under the current circumstances and Icelanders traveling abroad are encouraged to consider returning to Iceland earlier than planned. Icelanders returning to Iceland and lawful residence are required to self-quarantine for 14 days upon arrival.

The US Government has issued travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 outbreak, which will temporarily suspend travel for non-US citizens who have been physically present within the Schengen Area during the 14 days before their entry to the U.S.

The ban affects travel from 26 European countries to the U.S., including Iceland. The authorities note that the restrictions ”do not apply to legal permanent residents, (generally) immediate family members of U.S. citizens, and other individuals who are identified in the proclamation”.

The Embassy in Washington and the Consulate General in New York are closely monitoring the situation which is still evolving. We will be updating this information on a regular basis as needed. Due to the situation all visitors must request an appointment in advance before coming to the Embassy by e-mailing [email protected].

Icelandic citizens in need of assistance please direct your questions to the email [email protected], call +354 5450112 or contact us directly through messenger on Facebook.

For now, Icelandair is still flying to Boston. For more information on flights:

For travelers going to Iceland please note that ‼️ Iceland takes part in the Schengen and EU measures to close external borders to non-EFTA/EU nationals in order to prevent the spread of Covid-19 ‼️

Until the 17th of April, non-EFTA/EU citizens will not be able to enter the country. The restriction does not apply to transit passengers, relatives of EFTA/EU citizens or people with work- or residence permits in the region.

Please refer to travel advice from the U.S. Department of State: https://travel.state.gov/…/tra…/ea/covid-19-information.html

The US government has issued new guidelines for America during the global Coronavirus outbreak, such as:

  • Avoid social gatherings in groups of more than 10 people
Help make the next 15 days count by avoiding large social gatherings, where Coronavirus may be easily spread.
  • Practice good hygiene
Washing your hands, covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue, and disinfecting regularly will help protect you and people around you.
  • Even if you are young, or otherwise healthy, you are at risk and your activities can increase the risk for others. It is critical that you do your part to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Do your part. Slow the spread.

Furthermore we encourage you to follow the recommendation of local and state authorities. Many state authorities have issued stay at home orders. For those in the Washington DC area please find advice here: https://coronavirus.dc.gov/
