Statement by Iceland

Chair,
Families are important, no matter their shape or size. Gender responsive and family-oriented policies are key to ensuring equitable distribution of care and support, access to employment, education and overall enjoyment of human rights for all.
Few things have had a greater impact on gender equality and as a result the quality of life and standard of living in Iceland than the introduction of universal day care and policies on parental leave for all parents. This enabled increased access to employment for all parents, quickly leading to over 80% participation of women in the labor market.
Today, the right to parental leave in Iceland is 12 months, with the independent right of each parent being 6 months, with the permission to assign up to 6 weeks to the other parent. The objective of our policy is twofold: to ensure that children enjoy the care of their parents and that parents have equal work opportunities. Furthermore, the Equal pay legislation introduced in 2018 has been key to ensuring more equal pay for work of equal value.
We recognize that the early years of life are critical for children’s cognitive, emotional, and social development. Ensuring access for all to health services, including SRHR, and to nutrition, early education, and protection from violence for children is essential for fostering resilient and inclusive societies.
The availability of universal and affordable day care and pre-schools for all children in Iceland, in addition to the above-mentioned policies, have been instrumental in doing just that.
Progressive policies aimed at advancing gender equality are the foundation for an inclusive and rights-based society where everyone can prosper.
I thank you.
