HRC41 - Iceland statement - Human rights situation of the Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar
Interactive Dialogue with the High Commissioner of Human Rights on human rights situation of the Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar
10 July 2019
Statement by Iceland
Thank you Mr. President,
Iceland continues to be extremely concerned about the situation in Myanmar.
We remain committed to the protection of human rights in Myanmar, including those of Rohingya Muslims, and will continue to speak out on violations committed by the Myanmar armed forces.
The Special Rapporteur on Myanmar, Mrs. Yanghee Lee, detailed accounts last week, when she addressed this Council, of abduction and torture of civilians by both the Myanmar army and the rebel group fighting for greater autonomy in Rakhine state. We call on all sides to show restraint and avoid civilian casualties.
We condemn the telecommunications blackout recently ordered by the Myanmar military in parts of Rakhine state, as well as in neighboring Chin state, which cut all access to phones and internet. Such methods may be used to cover up abuses being carried out and are therefore of great concern.
Indeed, there are disturbing reports of civilians, mostly ethnic Rakhine men, being disappeared, or detained and interrogated by the Myanmar military on suspicion of association with the Arakan rebel group. Several of them have died while in custody.
Mr. President,
We regret the lack of progress in the peace process. An open, inclusive and participatory process is the only way to bring about long-lasting sustainable peace in Myanmar. There must be accountability for the crimes committed, which may amount to war crimes, and it is clear that the international community must ensure that this comes about.
I thank you.
