UNESCO: Statement by Iceland under item 221 EX/5.I.H on UNESCO's actions and emergency assistance programme for Ukraine

Statement delivered by H.E. Ms Audbjorg Halldórsdóttir
Permament Delegate of Iceland to UNESCO
221st Executive Board Session of UNESCO
Item 221 EX/5.I.H. UNESCO actions and emergency assistance programme for Ukraine
Paris, 15 April 2025

Thank you Chairperson for giving me the floor.

We commend UNESCO’s programme in supporting Ukraine, which is essential in combatting the long-term effect of Russia’s aggression, and not least we want to thank the team in Kyiv for their tireless efforts under very challenging circumstances.

Despite recent efforts, Russia’s illegal and wholly unjustified full-scale invasion and war of aggression against Ukraine continues. Sadly, this weekend’s brutal bombing on Sumy, killing innocent civilians who had gathered for Palm Sunday, continues to show Russia’s blatant disgregard for human rights, international law as well as ongoing peace efforts.

Close to four million Ukrainians are displaced internally, and almost seven million have had to flee their home country. Almost 13 million people continue to require urgent humanitarian assistance and protection, including children and persons with disabilities. The ongoing unlawful deportation of thousands of children by Russia is abhorrent.

The senseless brutality must stop. Ukraine deserves a just, lasting peace and our unwavering support.

Finally, Iceland supports the statement made by the Group of Friends of Ukraine.

Thank you.
